How to Water Houseplants Correctly

Overwatering is the number one killer of houseplants. Learn the simple techniques that will keep your plants hydrated and healthy.

How to Water Houseplants Correctly

Most plant deaths at home are caused by one thing: too much water. Unlike outdoor plants that can drain freely, potted plants trap moisture, and soggy roots quickly rot without oxygen.

The Finger Test

Before watering, push your finger about 2 cm into the soil. If it feels moist, wait. If it feels dry, water thoroughly until it drains out of the bottom.

Bottom Watering

Place your pot in a tray of water for 20–30 minutes and let the soil absorb what it needs from below. This encourages deep root growth and prevents soggy topsoil.

Signs of Overwatering

  • Yellowing lower leaves
  • Mushy stems at the base
  • Mold on the soil surface
  • Roots visible and brown (not white)
  • Signs of Underwatering

  • Dry, crispy leaf edges
  • Wilting even after watering
  • Bone-dry soil pulling away from the pot edges
  • Seasonal Adjustments

Most plants need far less water in winter when growth slows. Cut watering frequency by 30–50% from October to February.
