The peace lily is one of the most forgiving houseplants — it visibly tells you when it needs water, tolerates low light, and produces elegant white blooms with minimal fuss.
The Drooping Signal
A peace lily will dramatically wilt and droop when it's thirsty. This looks alarming but the plant is not dying — it's communicating. Water it, and within an hour or two it will be upright again. This makes peace lilies ideal for anyone who forgets to water on a schedule.
Light
Tolerates low light better than most flowering plants, but blooms best in medium indirect light. Keep away from direct sun which scorches the glossy leaves.
Watering
Wait for the plant to droop slightly, or check that the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. Water thoroughly and drain. Peace lilies are sensitive to fluoride in tap water — use filtered or rainwater if possible, as brown leaf tips are often caused by fluoride.
Humidity
As a tropical plant, peace lilies appreciate humidity. Place near a humidifier or group with other plants in bathrooms or kitchens.
Getting It to Bloom
Peace lilies bloom in spring and sometimes again in autumn. More light = more blooms. Being slightly rootbound encourages flowering.
Toxicity
Toxic to cats and dogs — contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from pets.
