USDA Hardiness Zones Explained

What your zone means, how to use it to choose the right plants, and how to push the limits with microclimates.

USDA Hardiness Zones Explained

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides the USA into 13 zones based on average annual minimum winter temperatures. Knowing your zone is the starting point for successful outdoor planting.

How Zones Work

Each zone spans a 10°F range of minimum winter temperature. Zone 1a is the coldest (below −60°F), Zone 13b the warmest (above 65°F). A plant labelled "Hardy to Zone 6" can survive winters as cold as −10°F.

Microclimates

  • South-facing walls trap heat and can push your microclimate 1 zone warmer
  • Low frost pockets where cold air pools can be 1 zone colder
  • Urban heat islands make city gardens consistently warmer
  • Hardiness is Just One Factor

Zones tell you about cold tolerance, but not heat tolerance, rainfall requirements, soil preferences, or humidity needs. Always check the full care profile.
