Causes

Caused by Armillaria fungi, which spread underground via root-like rhizomorphs, attacking and killing the roots and lower stem of woody plants, often those already stressed or weakened.

Treatment

There is no chemical cure; remove and destroy dead or dying plants along with as much of the root system as possible to reduce the spread of rhizomorphs.

Prevention

Keep plants healthy and unstressed, avoid planting susceptible species near known infected areas, and consider physical root barriers to limit rhizomorph spread.
