search

Identification

Tiny shiny black or striped beetles that jump like fleas when disturbed, found on brassica and other seedling leaves.

cycle

Life Cycle

Overwinter as adults in soil and debris, emerging in spring; most active in warm, dry weather with several generations per year.

warning

Damage Signs

Chew numerous small round holes ('shot-holes') in leaves, which can kill seedlings and slow growth of young plants.

healing

Treatment

Cover seedlings with fine mesh. Keep soil moist, as beetles favour dry conditions. Apply diatomaceous earth around plants.

Prevention

Sow into moist, fertile soil to speed seedlings past the vulnerable stage and use row covers from sowing.
