Japanese maple variety, Acer japonicum is a slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree with rounded, deeply palmate leaves and a broad, spreading form. Its foliage turns brilliant shades of gold, orange, and crimson in autumn, and some cultivars display attractive spring colors. It is less heat-tolerant than Acer palmatum and prefers cool, sheltered woodland environments.
