Clivia miniata

houseplant

Clivia miniata, commonly known as Kaffir lily or bush lily, is an elegant houseplant with glossy, dark green, strap-like leaves and clusters of striking orange or yellow flowers that bloom in spring. This African native is remarkably adaptable and tolerant of low light, making it an excellent choice for offices and dimly lit interiors. Once established, clivia requires minimal maintenance and can live for decades with proper basic care.

Care Guide

light_mode
Light
Tolerates a wide range of light conditions from low to bright indirect light. Prefers bright, indirect light for best flowering, but adapts well to partial shade and even moderate indoor light.
water_drop
Water
Water moderately during growing season (spring and summer), allowing the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is semi-dormant. Avoid overwatering, which causes root rot.
compost
Soil
Use well-draining, loam-based potting soil or a mixture of peat and perlite. Clivia prefers slightly acidic soil and good drainage to prevent root issues.
science
Fertiliser
Feed every 2–4 weeks during growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Stop fertilizing in winter to promote better flowering the following spring.
thermometer
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 65–75°F (18–24°C) during growth. A cool, dry winter rest period (55–65°F / 13–18°C) for 4–6 weeks promotes flowering.
humidity_percentage
Humidity
Tolerates average room humidity (40–60%); not particularly demanding. Occasional misting of leaves helps keep them clean and dust-free.
