Walnut Tree

Juglans regia

tree

A large, stately deciduous tree native to Central Asia, highly valued for its large, nutritious nuts and durable hardwood. Walnut trees are long-lived (100+ years), reaching 40–60 feet at maturity, and produce fragrant catkins in spring. They require considerable space, as they produce allelopathic compounds that inhibit growth of nearby plants.

Care Guide

light_mode
Light
Full sun (8+ hours daily) for vigorous growth and optimal nut production.
water_drop
Water
Moderate to deep watering during the first 2–3 years to establish roots. Once mature, fairly drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogging; ensure well-draining soil.
compost
Soil
Deep, well-draining loam or sandy loam with pH 6.0–7.5. Walnuts prefer fertile soil. Poor drainage leads to poor growth and disease. Mulch young trees to conserve moisture.
science
Fertiliser
Minimal fertilization needed if soil is fertile. Apply balanced fertilizer in early spring if growth slows. Avoid excessive nitrogen.
thermometer
Temperature
Hardy in temperate zones; requires cold winters (800+ chilling hours) for proper dormancy. Thrives in USDA zones 5–9.
humidity_percentage
Humidity
Moderate humidity. Good air circulation is beneficial. Walnut trees are generally disease-resistant but benefit from open, unobstructed canopies.
