Yellow-green beetles with either black stripes or black spots, found on leaves, flowers, and stems of cucurbits.
Life cycle
Adults overwinter in soil and plant debris, emerging in spring to feed and lay eggs at the base of plants. Larvae feed on roots underground for several weeks before pupating. Multiple generations per growing season.
Damage to Watermelon
Adults chew ragged holes in leaves and flowers and scar fruit surfaces; larvae feed on roots, weakening plants. Both stages can transmit bacterial wilt and cucumber mosaic virus, often more damaging than the direct feeding.
How to treat cucumber beetles on Watermelon
Hand-pick beetles in early morning when sluggish. Apply row covers until flowering. Use insecticidal soap, pyrethrin, or spinosad for heavy infestations, avoiding spraying during flowering to protect pollinators.
Preventing cucumber beetles on Watermelon
