How to Propagate Pothos (5 Easy Methods)

Pothos is one of the easiest plants to propagate. Turn one plant into many with these five simple methods — no special equipment needed.

How to Propagate Pothos (5 Easy Methods)

Pothos is the perfect plant for learning propagation. It's forgiving, fast-rooting, and thrives in water or soil.

Method 1: Water Propagation (Easiest)

  • Take a cutting just below a node
  • Remove the lowest leaf to expose the node
  • Place in a clear glass of water — node submerged, leaves above
  • Change water weekly
  • Root in 1–3 weeks. Pot into soil once roots are 3–5 cm long
  • Method 2: Soil Propagation

Take a cutting, dip in rooting hormone (optional), and plant directly into moist potting mix. Keep moist for 3–4 weeks.

    Method 3: Perlite or LECA

Propagate in a soilless medium. Better aeration than soil.

    Method 4: Sphagnum Moss

Wrap nodes in damp sphagnum moss, place in a clear bag to retain humidity.

    Method 5: Layering

Pin a section of vine to a small pot of soil. Once it roots (2–4 weeks), cut the vine to separate.

    Common Mistakes

  • No node on the cutting — you need at least one
  • Too much light — cuttings root best in indirect light
  • Forgetting to change water — stagnant water breeds bacteria
