Yellow Leaves on Houseplants: 8 Causes and Fixes

Yellow leaves are the most common houseplant distress signal — but they can mean very different things. Here's how to diagnose the real cause.

Yellow Leaves on Houseplants: 8 Causes and Fixes

Yellow leaves are your plant waving a yellow flag. The challenge is that many different problems cause the same symptom.

1. Overwatering (Most Common)

Signs: Yellowing starts on lower/older leaves. Soil feels wet or smells musty.

Fix: Allow soil to dry out. Check for root rot.

2. Underwatering

Signs: Yellowing with crispy brown edges. Soil is bone dry.

Fix: Water thoroughly.

3. Natural Leaf Drop

Signs: Oldest leaves at the base yellow and drop; rest of plant looks healthy.

Fix: Normal ageing process. No action needed.

4. Overfeeding (Nutrient Burn)

Signs: Yellow or brown leaf tips. White crusty deposits on soil.

Fix: Flush soil with water. Stop feeding for 2–3 months.

5. Nutrient Deficiency

Signs: Yellow between dark green veins = iron or magnesium deficiency.

Fix: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser.

6. Too Little Light

Signs: New leaves are small and pale. Overall yellowing.

Fix: Move closer to a window or add a grow light.

7. Root Bound

Signs: Roots visible through drainage holes.

Fix: Repot into a container 5 cm wider.

8. Pests

Signs: Yellow spots with visible pests on undersides.

Fix: Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
