Identifying scale insects on Monstera
Small brown, tan, or waxy bumps clustered along Monstera's thick stems and on the underside of leaf ribs — they're immobile and can be mistaken for a natural part of the stem at first glance.

Crawlers emerge from under scale and disperse. Settled scales are immobile under protective shell.
Damage to Monstera
Scale insects sap-suck along Monstera's stems and leaf ribs, weakening growth and coating surfaces in sticky honeydew that attracts sooty mould. Heavy infestations can cause yellowing and dieback of affected stems.
How to treat scale insects on Monstera
Scrape off visible scale with a fingernail or soft toothbrush, then wipe the area with rubbing alcohol. Follow with horticultural oil across stems and leaf undersides, repeating every 1–2 weeks until they're gone.
Preventing scale insects on Monstera
Inspect stems and leaf ribs regularly, especially where new growth emerges, and quarantine new plants before placing them near your Monstera.
