Symptoms
- check_circleEntire stems or branches hanging downward
- check_circlePlant leaning or toppling in the pot
- check_circleOuter branches drooping while centre is upright
- check_circleGradual progressive drooping over days
Causes
- arrow_rightUnderwatering — most common immediate cause
- arrow_rightOverwatering / root rot — roots can't support the plant
- arrow_rightPot too small — roots bound and unable to take up moisture
- arrow_rightInsufficient light causing weak, etiolated stems
- arrow_rightHeavy top growth without adequate root support
- arrow_rightPests damaging the stem base
How to Diagnose
Water the plant and observe over 2–4 hours. If it perks up, it was thirsty. If drooping continues or worsens, check the roots — inspect the base of stems for mushiness indicating rot. A plant that droops primarily toward one side likely needs rotating for better light distribution.
Treatment
For thirst: water thoroughly. For root rot: remove affected roots, repot into fresh compost. For weak stems: provide a stake or support while increasing light. For overgrown plants: either repot or prune to balance the root-to-shoot ratio.
Prevention
Water on a soil-moisture basis, not a calendar. Ensure pots have drainage holes. Rotate plants quarterly for even light. Don't let plants become severely rootbound.
