Symptoms
- check_circleLeaves fading from rich green to pale green
- check_circleNew leaves emerging pale or almost white
- check_circleBleached, washed-out appearance in direct sun
- check_circleOverall loss of colour saturation
Causes
- arrow_rightToo much direct sunlight bleaching the leaves
- arrow_rightNitrogen deficiency causing chlorophyll loss
- arrow_rightInsufficient light causing reduced chlorophyll production
- arrow_rightIron deficiency (interveinal chlorosis — veins stay green, tissue pales)
- arrow_rightMagnesium deficiency (older leaves affected first)
How to Diagnose
Is the paleness uniform or patchy? Uniform paleness across the whole plant in very bright sun = sunbleaching. Pale tissue between still-green veins = nutrient deficiency (iron or magnesium). Pale new growth only = possibly insufficient light. Assess fertiliser history and light conditions together.
Treatment
For sunbleaching: move out of intense direct sun. For nutrient deficiency: apply a balanced liquid fertiliser; if interveinal chlorosis is present, use a fertiliser containing chelated iron or magnesium. For low light: move closer to a window or add a grow light.
Prevention
Match the light level to the plant's specific needs. Feed during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. Repot periodically so nutrients are refreshed.
